Kenichi Nakano
Kenichi Nakano is a Partner and attorney (bengoshi) at Burg Law, a law firm based in the Minami-Aoyama district of Minato, Tokyo. With a practice built on corporate, litigation and international work, he has been recognised as winner of the Corporate INTL Global Awards 2026 — Corporate Lawyer of the Year in Japan.
Burg Law
Burg Law takes its name from the German word “Burg”, meaning fortress or refuge, expressing the firm's ambition to be a stronghold and sanctuary for its clients. From its base in central Tokyo, the firm advises across three principal areas. Its corporate practice covers internal controls, inter-company contracts and corporate disputes. Its litigation practice handles matters such as copyright-infringement claims, tax disputes, control disputes and damages claims. Its international practice addresses cross-border work, including mergers and acquisitions, overseas-investment advice and cross-border contracts.
This structure reflects a firm designed to support companies both in their day-to-day governance and in the more contentious or international situations that can arise. By combining corporate advisory with genuine litigation capability and cross-border experience, Burg Law is positioned to guide clients through the full life cycle of corporate activity, from establishing sound governance to defending the company's interests when disputes emerge.
Kenichi Nakano
Kenichi Nakano brings extensive corporate law experience to the firm. He has served as an outside audit-and-supervisory director for listed companies, a role that reflects the trust placed in him at the highest levels of corporate governance. Earlier in his career he practised at Anderson Mōri & Tomotsune, one of Japan's leading law firms, and he studied at a law school in the United States and holds a New York bar licence. He is fluent in English, which supports his work on international and cross-border matters.
His areas of focus include internal controls, legal compliance and overseas-investment matters, together with international transactional work. This blend of governance expertise, compliance experience and cross-border capability is particularly valuable to Japanese companies expanding internationally and to foreign businesses engaging with the Japanese market.
Corporate law in Japan
Japan is one of the world's largest economies, and its corporate legal framework, centred on the Companies Act, places significant emphasis on governance, internal controls and the responsibilities of directors and auditors. In recent years, corporate-governance reform has heightened the importance of robust internal controls and compliance, and companies increasingly value advisers who understand both the letter of the law and the practical expectations of regulators, shareholders and the market.
Cross-border transactions add further complexity. Japanese companies investing overseas, and international companies investing into Japan, must reconcile Japanese corporate and contractual law with the requirements of other jurisdictions. A lawyer with governance experience, international qualifications and language ability is well placed to bridge these worlds.

Bridging Japan and the wider world
Japanese corporate practice places particular weight on the reliability and long-term relationships between a company and its advisers, and on a careful, consensus-oriented approach to governance and risk. A lawyer who has served at board level as an outside audit-and-supervisory director understands these expectations from the inside, and can advise not only on what the law requires but on how decisions are likely to be received by regulators, shareholders and the market. Kenichi Nakano's international qualifications and fluency in English extend this capability across borders, allowing him to support Japanese companies as they invest overseas and to help foreign investors understand the Japanese corporate environment. In an economy where cross-border activity continues to grow, this ability to bridge the domestic and the international is a defining strength of his practice.
With senior governance experience, a background at a leading firm and international qualifications, Kenichi Nakano is a distinguished corporate practitioner in the Japanese market. The Corporate INTL Global Awards 2026 — Corporate Lawyer of the Year in Japan recognises his expertise and the client-focused ethos of Burg Law.
