Gerald was called to the Singapore bar in 1997. He began his practice at the boutique shipping firm of Ang & Partners, working under the auspices of the now Justice Belinda Ang. In 2001, Gerald joined another boutique shipping Joseph Tan Jude Benny in 2001, and was a Partner of the firm from 2003. In 2010, Gerald moved to join the International Law Firm of Ince & Co. LLP in their Shanghai office where he gained significant experience of the Chinese shipping markets. Following a 2-year stint in Shanghai, Gerald joined CNPLaw LLP to establish its Admiralty and Shipping Practice which would give greater scope and dimension to the Firm and its clients.
Gerald is a natural in the courtroom, a fact early anticipated by the Tan Ah Tah Advocacy Prize he won when he was at Bar course. An experienced advocate, he has litigated a large portfolio of major shipping cases, involving collisions, salvage claims, insurance claims, carriage of goods by sea and cargo claims. Gerald's daring and dedicated approach to the law has made many of these cases landmark cases in Singapore.
His portfolio of contentious shipping work includes admiralty enforcement, litigation of cargo claims, oil and gas disputes for well-known oil majors, contracts of affreightment, marine insurance and P&I matters. He has handled many cases before the Singapore courts up to the Singapore Court of Appeal and has experience in handling and conducting arbitration proceedings in London and Singapore in institutional and non-institutional arbitrations, as well as instructed local counsel in the conduct of proceedings in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand.
On the non-contentious front, Gerald handles ship finance, ship sales and purchases, registration and change of flag matters, review and advice of charterparties, ship management and manning agreements.
