He has represented major technology companies and venture capital funds across multiple regions, and his career has combined legal practice with hands-on business roles. He previously served as a principal at Aethlon Capital and as executive vice president and director of corporate finance at Dougherty Securities, and he founded and led an internet company, giving him a first-hand appreciation of the commercial and financing challenges his clients face. He has been involved in co-founding a substantial number of companies over the course of his career.

His academic credentials are similarly strong: he holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and both a law degree and an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley. He is admitted to practise in California and Minnesota, and he has taught as adjunct faculty at Santa Clara University School of Law, the University of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota.
