At the core of SKV’s litigative strength is Shri Venkatesh, Founding Partner and Head of the firm’s Disputes & Regulatory practice. For more than 16 years, Mr Venkatesh has had a commanding presence before the Supreme Court of India, various High Courts, tribunals and commissions in matters involving commercial suits, regulatory contours, arbitration, insolvency and sector-specific regulation.
Mr Venkatesh’s litigation portfolio includes: Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) in the Supreme Court challenging High Court judgments across India; Statutory Civil Appeals in such sophisticated domains as energy, competition and environmental law; as well as Transfer Petitions in the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, he has represented and advised both creditors and corporate debtors under the Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code, in proceedings before both the National Company Law Tribunal and the Supreme Court. His IBC litigation work addresses contested defaults, resolution plans and creditor-debtor rights.
He has led numerous arbitration matters, both domestic and international, representing clients before sitting and retired judicial members. His authorship – most notably, a recent contribution analysing possible modifications to arbitral awards post–Sections 34 and 37 reforms – demonstrates his deep involvement in thought leadership on arbitration jurisprudence.
SKV, under Mr Venkatesh’s leadership, has represented a wide range of major power, infrastructure, energy and corporate entities, including Tata Power, Reliance Power, Vedanta, NTPC, NHPC, Damodar Valley Corporation, and others:
• Delhi High Court Injunction, IDBI Bank vs. SEUPPTCL: SKV acted for the transferee in a high-value bank guarantee dispute worth ₹58.5 crore, successfully obtaining interim injunctive relief.
• Cogoport–Mituj Arbitration: SKV’s team obtained an award of ₹24–41 crore against Cogoport for illegal SPA termination, led by Shri Venkatesh alongside Aditya Vardhan Sharma.
• Tata Power–Druk Green Hydropower Deal: SKV advised Tata Power in a strategic investment in the 600 MW Khologchhu hydropower project in Bhutan.
• Renewable Energy Writ Petitions: SKV represented renewable generators before the Supreme Court in AP tariff disputes and transfer petitions.
• Income Tax Section 80 IA Case: The firm successfully argued before the Supreme Court for Jindal Steel & Power in a landmark market-value interpretation dispute.
