23 Essex Street is one of England’s leading sets of barristers’ chambers, with premises in the heart of London’s legal district, Manchester and Nottingham. Traditionally a criminal and regulatory practice, with some of the most well-regarded QCs and junior barristers in the country, taking on some of its most high-profile cases, it launched its commercial team in July 2015.
23ES Commercial was formed initially of 11 specialist commercial barristers and their clerk who joined as a team from a boutique set of chambers. In the last 6 months, the group has augmented with the selective recruitment of experienced and exceptional counsel from elsewhere and now offers a team of 14 barristers, offering a range of seniority and expertise.
The aim of 23ES Commercial is to offer the eloquent advocacy, expert knowledge and intellectual ability expected of barristers specialising in this area, combined with approachability, client friendliness and a commercial, honest approach to fees. Our barristers enjoy working as part of a team, and we are committed to building relationships with solicitors and other professionals to the benefit of ourselves and our clients. To this end, the commercial group offers seminars and in-house training across a range of legal topics and can provide bespoke programmes on request.

The leading industry directory, ‘The Legal 500’, describes the clerking as “efficient and responsive” and ranks a number of the team’s barristers as leaders in the field of commercial, banking, insolvency and chancery law. This commercial expertise complements 23 Essex Street’s other specialisms. For example, chambers has recently been running a seminar looking at criminal and civil actions that may be brought against misfeasant company directors.
