Laryea, Laryea & Co., P.C. is a leading law firm in Ghana, offering a comprehensive range of commercial and corporate legal advice. The focus of our work is on natural resources transactions, investment and the establishment of business, labour, taxation, intellectual property and higher education.
At the head of the firm is Professor Akilagpa Sawyerr, a jurist and legal practitioner specialising in international commercial law, energy and mining regimes, and higher education. Outside Ghana, he has taught and practised law in several countries, including Tanzania, Papua New Guinea and the United States.
Professor Sawyerr obtained his academic qualification from the University of Durham (LL.B), the University of London (LL.M) and the University of California, Berkeley (LL.M and JSD), and was called to the Bar in England (Lincoln’s Inn) (1963), Ghana (1963) and Papua New Guinea (1979).
Until 2008 Professor Sawyerr was heavily involved in teaching, research and university administration as a Professor of Law, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, and Secretary-General of the Association of African Universities (AAU).
He is the author of a number of books and papers on a wide range of topics, with an emphasis on international commercial relations, natural resources and development law, and issues of higher education in African countries.
Dr. Sawyerr has held high public office in Ghana, formerly as a Member of the Council of State and Chairman of the Minerals Commission, and currently as Chairman of the Volta River Authority, the leading energy generating company in the country.
Among the highlights of his experience, Professor Sawyerr was Chief Negotiator for the Government of Ghana in the highly successful re-negotiation of the Valco Agreement between the Government of Ghana and Kaiser Aluminum, for years the most significant foreign investment in Ghana. This involved the negotiation and drafting of a series of highly complex legal arrangements in connection with power supply, taxation, environmental issues, etc.
Professor Sawyerr is currently leading a national team charged with reviewing the legal regime governing mining in Ghana and re-negotiating existing stability agreements in the sector to bring them in line with the new scheme.
As Head of Laryea, Laryea & Co., Akilagpa Sawyerr leads a strong team with expertise in fields such as labour law, maritime and shipping and international transactions.
