At the helm of CIPN's Insurance Law practice is Carlos D Perez-Mesa, Jr, a trial attorney whose legal career spans nearly four decades. Admitted to practise in Hawaii since 1991, Mr Perez-Mesa has an impressive track record, having tried more than 20 jury and bench trials to verdict and participated in more than 300 arbitrations and mediations. His legal acumen encompasses a broad spectrum of litigation areas, including product liability, construction law, employment discrimination, personal injury, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, environmental law, automobile and premises liability, civil rights under Title VII, as well as workers' compensation.
Before joining CIPN, Mr Perez-Mesa honed his litigation skills as a Partner at Epstein & Perez-Mesa and served for seven years as a trial attorney for AIG's Staff Counsel in Honolulu. His tenure at AIG involved defending insured clients in complex personal injury and premises liability cases. Notably, his legal arguments have led to three published opinions by the Hawaii Supreme Court, underscoring his influence in shaping state insurance law jurisprudence.
Mr Perez-Mesa's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in English from Washington University in St Louis and a Juris Doctor from Rutgers Law School-Newark, where he served as the general editor of the Rutgers Law Review. He began his legal career clerking for Judge Nicholas Mandak in Passaic County, New Jersey, laying a solid foundation for his subsequent legal endeavours.
