Stuart E. Eizenstat

Stuart E. Eizenstat is Senior Counsel at Covington & Burling LLP in Washington DC, where he advises clients on international trade, regulatory matters and disputes with governments. One of the most experienced public servants to practise in the field, he has been named Trade & Customs Expert of the Year in Washington DC, US, at the Corporate INTL Global Awards 2025, an honour that reflects a career spent at the centre of American and international economic policy.

Ambassador Eizenstat's standing in trade and customs work is built on some fifteen years of senior government service across six US administrations. Under President Carter he served as Chief White House Domestic Policy Adviser, and during the Clinton administration he held a succession of the most senior economic posts in government: US Ambassador to the European Union, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs, and Deputy Secretary of the Treasury.
