Mr. L Chidi Ilogu

Mr. L Chidi Ilogu graduated LLB (Hons) in 1974 from the University of Ife, was called to the Nigerian Bar in June 1975 and holds a Masters Degree (LLM) in Maritime Law from Cardiff Law School, University of Wales (1991). He is the Principal Counsel of Foundation Chambers (a foremost maritime law firm based in Lagos, Nigeria), and has over 35 years' experience in legal practice. He is a Consultant to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on legal matters; member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK); the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN); and member of both the Nigerian Bar Association and the International Bar Association.

He has attended several international courses on Ship Financing and Shipping including the Euromoney Training Course on Ship Finance in 1995; the Oil & Gas Development Seminar by the International Law Institute & Georgetown University, Washington DC, 2011 and the 38th Short Course of the Institute of Maritime Law, University of Southampton, UK in 2011.

Chidi lectured Carriage of Goods by Sea at the Institute of Maritime Law, Lagos State University between 2001 and 2005. Between 2006 and 2010, he served as Chairman of the Maritime Law Committee, Section on Business Law, Nigerian Bar Association. In 2009, he served on the Transport Schematic Working Group for the Nigeria Vision 2020 Committee. In June 2010, he was the main IMO facilitator at a Regional Training and Workshop on the Legal Implementation of the Ballast Water Management Convention with participants from 16 West & Central African States. Between August 2010 and May 2011, he acted as Chairman of the Federal Ministry of Transport Ports Reform Evaluation Committee.

Currently, he is Second Vice President of the Nigerian Maritime Law Association and a Board member of the Maritime Arbitrators Association of Nigeria. He specializes in admiralty practice, ship sale and purchase, ship financing and mortgages and consults from time to time for the National Assembly, the Federal Ministry of Transport and the major maritime parastatals in Nigeria on maritime policies and legislation. He acts for P&I clubs and as retained Solicitor to several shipping agencies, their overseas principals, logistic companies, oil & gas companies and a port terminal operator.

He is a frequent resource person at the Maritime Seminar for Judges organised biennially by Nigerian Shippers' Council/National Judicial Institute. He is the Author of Essays on Maritime Law and Practice and has published over 35 articles in local and international journals on shipping and maritime law.
