This long history and pan-African orientation give the firm a distinctive position. Protecting brands across Africa involves navigating a patchwork of national and regional systems, and clients benefit from advisers with deep roots on the continent and long experience of managing intellectual-property rights across multiple jurisdictions.

Trademark law in South Africa

South Africa has a well-developed trademark system administered through its Companies and Intellectual Property Commission, and the country is an important gateway for brand owners seeking protection across the wider African market. Effective brand protection requires careful clearance searches, well-managed filing and prosecution, vigilant enforcement against infringement, and the strategic management of portfolios that may span many countries. Practitioners must also keep pace with developments in adjacent areas such as copyright and domain names, which increasingly intersect with brand protection in the digital environment.
