WTS TAX and the WTS Global network
WTS TAX d.o.o. is the Slovenian member of WTS Global, an international network focused on tax and related advisory services. Operating from Ljubljana, the firm advises businesses and individuals on the full range of Slovenian and international tax questions, from corporate tax planning to the taxation of internationally mobile individuals. Membership of a global tax network is particularly valuable for a jurisdiction such as Slovenia, where a significant proportion of tax work has a cross-border dimension and clients need advisers connected to counterparts across Europe and beyond.
Mateja Babič
Mateja Babič has been a tax partner at WTS TAX d.o.o. since 2017. Her expertise lies in international tax law in the broad sense, including corporate tax planning, mergers and acquisitions and cross-border transactions. On the individual side, she advises on the taxation of individuals, covering tax-residency status, tax compliance, social-security contributions and the treatment of capital investments. On the corporate side, her work extends to permanent-establishment analysis, withholding tax and transfer pricing. Alongside her advisory practice, she lectures on international tax law in Slovenia.
Her background reflects a strong academic and professional grounding in the field. She holds a bachelor's degree in finance from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Ljubljana and a master's in international tax law from the Vienna University of Economics and Business (Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien), and is a PhD candidate at the European Faculty of Law in Ljubljana. Before her current role she gained experience as a tax manager at Leitner Leitner and as a tax partner at GOBBS d.o.o. She works in German and English in addition to Slovenian.
Tax advisory in Slovenia
Slovenia, as a member state of the European Union, operates a tax system shaped both by domestic legislation and by the wider framework of EU law and the network of double-tax treaties. Businesses operating in or through Slovenia must manage corporate income tax, value-added tax, withholding taxes and transfer-pricing obligations, while internationally active companies and individuals face questions of residence, permanent establishment and the coordination of social-security coverage across borders. Advisers in this space combine technical mastery of domestic rules with an understanding of how European directives and bilateral treaties allocate taxing rights.
Transfer pricing and permanent-establishment analysis, two areas central to Mateja Babič's practice, are among the most demanding aspects of international taxation. They require careful documentation, economic analysis and an appreciation of how tax authorities are likely to view intra-group arrangements and cross-border activity. Similarly, advising internationally mobile individuals on residency, compliance and social security demands attention to detail and a coordinated view across jurisdictions.
