How do I find a good lawyer or adviser in China?
Check that they are qualified or registered to practise in China, for example with the local bar association or professional body, and that they have handled matters like yours, including any cross-border element. Ask who will do the work, which languages they work in and how they charge before you instruct them. Each lawyer or adviser listed on this page has a profile with their firm, practice areas and contact details, so you can compare them before getting in touch.
How much does a lawyer cost in China?
Fees depend on the firm, the experience of the person advising you and how complex the matter is. Firms commonly charge by the hour, a fixed fee for a defined piece of work, or a combination of the two. Ask for a written estimate and the terms of engagement before any work starts.
Do I need a local lawyer or adviser in China if I am based abroad?
Matters governed by the law of China, or that involve its courts, registries or authorities, usually need an adviser qualified there. If you already have an adviser at home, they can often work alongside a local lawyer or adviser in China, which keeps the advice joined up on cross-border matters.
Can I find an English-speaking lawyer or adviser in China?
Many lawyers and advisers who work with international clients advise in English, but it is worth checking. Ask about working languages when you first get in touch, and whether documents can be provided in English as well as the local language.
Should I use a lawyer or an adviser?
Use a lawyer for legal advice, contracts and anything that may end up before a court or a regulator. Advisers such as accountants, tax advisers and consultants handle compliance, financial and business advice. Many matters need both, which is why Find an Expert lists both, under the Legal and Advisory specialisms.
